History

The site of the eight story Regillus Building was once the property of August Schilling (of Schilling spices notoriety) who built a stately mansion surrounded by gardens in the late 19th Century.  The now smaller Regillus garden used to extend all the way to Lake Merritt where there was a boat house and dock for use by the tenants.  The original construction was financed by banker Charles Crocker of which Oakland’s Crocker Highlands neighborhood is named after.  The building was designed in 1921 by Architect Willis Lowe and was originally a 40 unit luxury apartment building and was subsequently restored, repaired and converted into condominiums.
