From the foot of the Claremont Resort Hotel and Spa, Tunnel Road and Claremont Avenue snake their way up into the area known as the Claremont Hills, where San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge and full Bay views can be quite spectacular. Many homes were destroyed in the 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm and newer architecture reflects the unique and sometimes strange rebuilding of the area. Over 35,000, upper income families reside here, popular for the combination of remote privacy, elegance, and close proximity to freeways, urban and suburban centers, and nature preserves.

The Claremont Hills neighborhood is home to the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve that features a small network of firetrails, beginning with a steep climb, that merges with Strawberry Canyon where hikers and runners with dogs delight in the gentle wildness and panoramic views just outside their back doors. The Claremont Canyon Conservancy act as stewards to these wildlands and offer educational programs to the community. Prior to the construction of the Caldecott Tunnel in the early 1900′s, the canyon was used by Pony Express riders carrying mail between Sacramento and San Francisco and in later decades a stage coach utilized routes into Contra Costa County. Farther up into the hills, Claremont Avenue meets Grizzly Peak and the sprawling trails from the southwestern entrance into Tilden Park. For families, Tilden Park offers up The Little Farm, a botanic garden, Lake Anza for swimming and picnics, a carousel, a golf course, and a steam train ride.

For the nearest shopping and dining options from the Claremont Hills, choose from two smaller shopping areas. The first, on Claremont Avenue just south of the Claremont Hotel, has as its hub, the charming Star Grocery, an old-timey market with a gourmand’s touch. Or drop by the cluster of shops at Domingo Avenue, at the west end of the Claremont Hotel, which features Peet’s Coffee, the Bread Garden bakery, and Rick and Ann’s, a cozy neighborhood family favorite since 1989 for gourmet “home-style” cooking. For elegant dining with breathtaking views of the Bay, The Meritage inside the Claremont Hotel, is a more upscale option in this area. All your shopping needs can be met in the Elmwood and Rockridge neighborhoods along College Avenue, mere minutes away by car, and Main Street in Walnut Creek is a short drive through the Caldecott Tunnel for even more options.

Freeway access to a all destinations from the Claremont Hills is immediate at the top of Tunnel Road. AC Transit runs bus lines along Claremont, College, and Ashby Avenues connecting to the BART at Rockridge and Ashby stations.
